María del Mar Hernández Gil de Lamadrid is a visual artist and photographer working between Puerto Rico and New York City. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus, and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from Parsons School of Design, The New School, NYC. Her work has been featured in exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including Governing Bodies at the Arnold and Sheila Aronson Galleries, NYC; Apparatus of Discomfort at Photoville, Brooklyn; and the Yokosuka Peace Art Exhibition & International Biennial of Prints in Japan.
Hernández Gil de Lamadrid was awarded the Parsons Graduate Travel Award, which allowed her to travel to China for a project and to participate in "Unfixed" at the Pingyao International Photography Festival. Recently, she participated in The Spruce Art Residency in Indiana, PA, and was featured in the group exhibition We Are Here To Serve You at the Arnold and Sheila Aronson Galleries, NYC.

María del Mar Hernández Gil de Lamadrid’s art practice focuses on photography and video as tools to explore themes of identity, representation, and colonial legacies within the Caribbean context. Her work examines the mediated portrayal of self and community, addressing broader issues such as the enduring impact of colonial history and the pressing realities of climate change in the region.
Through conceptual and visual narratives, Hernández Gil de Lamadrid captures the intricate connections between personal identity and shared cultural experiences. Her projects often critique historical and environmental injustices, using creative processes that reveal both the fragility and resilience of Caribbean life. By intertwining storytelling with visual artistry, her work invites viewers to reflect on the complexities of heritage, place, and the enduring effects of colonialism on contemporary existence.
